Atelier 1 is where everything at MATEXT begins. Housed in a historic building in Biel/Bienne, it is where capture, post-production, research, and the material library coexist under one roof, a space designed so that every stage of the work remains connected to the next.

The main studio is entirely dedicated to photography and post-production. The space was built to scale without major reconfiguration, with capacity for three photographers working simultaneously. The material library is integrated within it, centralizing the full range of available samples and allowing direct access to materials throughout the production process.

The historic character of the building is not incidental. It shapes how the space is occupied, working with what already exists rather than against it. This is where the MATEXT protocol developed, between the technical discipline of the studio and the raw presence of matter, captured here before reaching professionals across the world.
